Pacioretty further cemented his bid to make the Canadiens team when he scored in regulation and in the shootout as Montreal downed the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in NHL preseason action Tuesday night.
Markov's shootout goal gives Canadiens win
DETROIT The Montreal Canadiens left Detroit with a win and a scare. Andrei Markov scored the only goal of the shootout to lift the Canadiens to a 3-2 exhibition win over the Red Wings on Wednesday night, a game marred by a frightening collision that left defenceman Mathieu Carle briefly unconscious on the ice.

DETROIT Chris Chelios thinks he has at least one more season left in his 46-year-old legs. The veteran defenceman signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday and is prepared to accept a lesser role with the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Sakic decides to give it one more go-round
CALGARY There are many ways to examine Joe Sakic's decision to return to the Colorado Avalanche for his 20th NHL season, but let's consider it purely in terms of dollars, even if Sakic didn't. At this stage of his career, if the 39-year-old Sakic were prepared test the open market, you can be pretty sure that his hometown team, the Vancouver Canucks, would have diverted that $20-million (all currency U.S.

In his career, Downey has collected seven goals, nine assists and 487 penalty minutes.

Spurned by Vancouver, Tambellini heads to Edmonton
VANCOUVER When Mike Gillis assumed control of the Vancouver Canucks in April, it was assumed he would purge the NHL club's front office and that spurned assistant general manager Steve Tambellini would ride the first wave of departures. Sure enough, Tambellini is leaving, but not without a twist. Vancouver's No.
Decision on Sundin may be made this week
The deadline still stands. Later this week, free-agent centre Mats Sundin is expected to announce his plans for the coming NHL season. Will he play? His agent, J.P. Barry of CAA Sports, believes so even though he has yet to hear that from Sundin. But just to be sure, Claes Elefalk, CAA's Stockholm-based agent, is scheduled to sit down with the former Toronto Maple Leafs captain today and get a read on the situation. "Claes will meet with Mats and talk," Barry said.
Gloves come off during arbitration
NHL salary arbitration hearings have been few and far between this summer, and there's a reason. When cases go to a hearing, they can often get ugly, as players, agents and teams fight for dollars under the salary cap. Washington Capitals defenceman Shaone Morrisonn is the only player who's been through the process this off-season. He was awarded a one-year, $1.975-million (all currency U.S.) contract last Saturday after a hearing last Thursday in Toronto.
