Predators suspend Radulov
NASHVILLE The Nashville Predators suspended forward Alexander Radulov indefinitely without pay for deciding to stick with his Russian KHL team rather than return to the NHL club. General manager David Poile announced the suspension Tuesday in a statement.
NHL refuses Russian compensation offer
The NHL refuses to entertain compensation offers from a newly formed Russian hockey league for the signing of forward Alex Radulov while the player was under contract with the Nashville Predators. And until Radulov's contract with the Predators is honored, the NHL won't consider negotiating a player transfer agreement with the Continental Hockey League (KHL), NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an e-mail on Monday.
Gloves come off during arbitration
NHL salary arbitration hearings have been few and far between this summer, and there's a reason. When cases go to a hearing, they can often get ugly, as players, agents and teams fight for dollars under the salary cap. Washington Capitals defenceman Shaone Morrisonn is the only player who's been through the process this off-season. He was awarded a one-year, $1.975-million (all currency U.S.) contract last Saturday after a hearing last Thursday in Toronto.
Del Biaggio ducked due diligence: report
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has been accused of circumventing the league's customary background check on beleaguered William (Boots) Del Biaggio when he purchased a minority stake in the Nashville Predators last fall. The NHL denies the claim. According to a report in the Tennessean newspaper, California-based Canadian entrepreneur Doug Bergeron said Del Biaggio boasted that his financial statements never underwent the due diligence process that prospective NHL owners face.
Predators fiasco puts spotlight on Bettman again
Canadian hockey fans see Gary Bettman differently than the folks who pay his salary, which should come as no surprise. Not that they have always seen him the same way themselves. His arrival in the job as NHL commissioner was greeted as another chapter in the mythic them-versus-us struggle that pits the authentic, hockey-loving Canadian against the U.S. Philistines who can never really understand.
Boots puts Bettman in awkward position
So what's the difference between Jim Balsillie and William (Boots) Del Biaggio? Well, Balsillie seems to actually have the money that everyone assumes he does, thanks to the success of those addictive BlackBerrys. Unlike Boots, he isn't under bankruptcy protection, he isn't facing a wave of lawsuits from angry lenders who believe they were defrauded, his wife hasn't split, he isn't under investigation by the FBI.
Osgood slams door on Predators' season
NASHVILLE The Detroit Red Wings can take a couple days to rest up. The NHL's best team in the regular season won't miss the Western Conference semifinals this year. Nicklas Lidstrom and Jiri Hudler each scored, and the Red Wings closed out their opening series by beating the Nashville Predators 3-0 in Game 6 on Sunday.
Zetterberg gets Wings rolling
DETROIT The Detroit Red Wings called it a fortunate play. The Nashville Predators claimed it was questionable call. The end result was a tiebreaking goal by Henrik Zetterberg at 6:54 of the third period that helped Detroit to a 3-1 victory over Nashville on Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round series.
Governors approve sale of Wild
ST. PAUL, Minn. Craig Leipold officially took over as owner of the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, completing the purchase of the team from Bob Naegele in the middle of the first-round playoff series against Colorado. "It's been a long process," Leipold said at a press conference. "Lots of signatures the last couple days. We were hoping to get it done last week and didn't get done. It just kept dragging out and dragging out.
Canucks face uphill challenge
VANCOUVER When Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis says missing the NHL playoffs is never an acceptable result in this marketplace, he is in lockstep with the fan base and ensures the lofty expectations that greeted the 2007-08 season will survive into next fall.
Canucks bow out
VANCOUVER Just as the Vancouver Canucks were stepping onto the General Motors Place ice surface Thursday night, the Nashville Predators were celebrating a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues, a win that brought them within a whisker of the NHL's postseason. And so, when the puck dropped, the situation for the Canucks was clear. No more varying scenarios and complicated mathematics.
Predators make the playoffs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Dan Ellis credited Nashville Predators fans with giving the team the final push it needed to hold on and beat the St. Louis Blues. Starting with the last television timeout, more than 17,000 fans stood and stayed on their feet waving the white T-shirts they received as a promotional item. The cheering was spontaneous and loud in response to the Predators rallying for a 3-2 win over the Blues.
Canucks try to stay loose
VANCOUVER After a dumbfounding 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, one that came despite a two-goal lead and with so much at stake, the Vancouver Canucks retreated to their regular postgame routine on stationary bikes in the General Motors Place exercise room. On this night, virtually every set of eyes was locked on the television, watching highlights of the other important games in the NHL's Western Conference playoff race.
Canucks face uphill struggle
VANCOUVER The Vancouver Canucks may feel like the butt of an April Fool's Day joke after blowing a lead in a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night, but what transpired was no gag. It was reality and it brought about an even harsher reality: the very real possibility that the 2007-08 campaign will end Saturday night and go down as a failure.
Canucks control own destiny
VANCOUVER The Vancouver Canucks can take a major step towards the NHL postseason with a victory Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. But not as large a step as the Avalanche can. The Canucks play Colorado at General Motors Place, the second of four consecutive home games to end the regular season.
