Pacioretty making a name for himself

MONTREAL — Rookie hopeful Max Pacioretty might want to give his father some of the credit for breaking the ice and scoring his first preseason goal. Pacioretty further cemented his bid to make the Canadiens team when he scored in regulation and in the shootout as Montreal downed the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in NHL preseason action Tuesday night.

Same old, same old hapless Maple Leafs

They may be the new, rebuilding Toronto Maple Leafs but right now they look a little too much like the old, self-destructing Toronto Maple Leafs. In their past two exhibition games, the Leafs coughed up third-period leads, something last season's team did regularly, which got a whole lot of people fired. Normally, this would not be a matter of great concern since a lot of inexperienced players were added to the team and it is the NHL's preseason.

Wilson already shuffling the deck

PITTSBURGH — When his top two forward lines displayed little chemistry in their first outing together, Ron Wilson was eager to conduct a secondary experiment. The new Toronto Maple Leafs coach, whose team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night, had all summer to formulate line combinations.

Barnes announces retirement

DALLAS — Stu Barnes is putting away his skates with a smile on his face. After playing more than 1,100 NHL games, the 37-year-old had just started thinking it was time to move on when the Dallas Stars gave him an opportunity to join their coaching staff. The timing couldn't have been much better.

Bruins buy out Murray

BOSTON — Glen Murray's second tour of duty with the Boston Bruins has officially come to an end. The Bruins bought out the final year of the forward's contract Saturday. The move wasn't surprising as Boston placed Murray, a native of Bridgewater, N.S., on waivers earlier this week. He cleared waivers without another team putting in a claim on the veteran. Murray, 35, was scheduled to earn US$4.

Blackhawks excited at prospect

CHICAGO — Dustin Byfuglien remembers the fun he had playing outdoor hockey as a kid in Minnesota. The 23-year-old Blackhawks right winger will get a chance to relive the experience — at least for a day — when Chicago hosts the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on New Year's Day at baseball's Wrigley Field.

NHL hopes Wrigley game will raise profile

CHICAGO — The National Hockey League is hoping its second Winter Classic outdoor game, scheduled to be played at revered baseball park Wrigley Field on Jan. 1 next year, will help raise the sport's profile. "We certainly expect that the NHL Winter Classic will be a home run for hockey in this ballpark," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said on Tuesday of the game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the rival Detroit Red Wings.

Penguins re-sign Taffe

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Jeff Taffe to a one-year contract on Monday, giving him a chance to play a second season with the team. The six-foot-three, 208-pound forward debuted with the Penguins in December. In 45 games, Taffe had five goals and seven assists. The native of Hastings, Minn., was originally chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 2000 NHL draft.

Gilmour, Clark to be honoured

TORONTO — Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour will soon take their place among the Toronto Maple Leafs' all-time greats. The popular former Leafs captains will have banners raised at the Air Canada Centre in separate pre-game ceremonies this season to honour their achievements with the NHL club. Clark's No. 17 banner will go up on Nov. 22 before a game against the Chicago Blackhawks while Gilmour's No. 93 will be raised Jan.

Toews named Blackhawks captain

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks announced Friday that centre Jonathan Toews will serve as the team's captain for the 2008-09 season, making him the third-youngest captain in NHL history. Only Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby and Tampa Bay Lightning centre Vincent Lecavalier, both while still 19, became captains at a younger age than the 20-year-old Toews.

Predators fiasco puts spotlight on Bettman — again

Canadian hockey fans see Gary Bettman differently than the folks who pay his salary, which should come as no surprise. Not that they have always seen him the same way themselves. His arrival in the job as NHL commissioner was greeted as another chapter in the mythic them-versus-us struggle that pits the authentic, hockey-loving Canadian against the U.S. Philistines who can never really understand.

Emery opens up

Ray Emery was typically enigmatic when he opened up about his troubled last season in Ottawa on TSN's "Off the Record" Monday, acting both apologetic and aloof when describing his part in the Senators' monumental collapse. Emery held himself largely accountable for the way his career has radically changed over the past couple of years.

Schenn dreams of the big show

The next time Luke Schenn arrives in Toronto, he's hoping to stay for good. The stingy junior-aged defenceman from Saskatoon, who was drafted fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the NHL entry draft last month, is among 24 players attending the Leafs' week-long prospects camp.

Lightning add Recchi

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning signed veteran forward Mark Recchi to a US$1.25-million, one-year deal plus incentives as reported on TSN's website on Monday. Recchi, 40, was picked up by the Atlanta Thrashers off waivers last season from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sundin sits back as other big names sign

Mats Sundin could take “several weeks” before deciding whether he wants to play an 18th NHL season. After taking 24 hours to digest the four formal offers presented to him on the opening day of the NHL free-agent frenzy, including an astounding two-year, $20-million (all currency U.S.) from the Vancouver Canucks, Sundin released a five-sentence statement through his agent that said he needs more time.
