Van Ryn ready to saddle up
TORONTO Mike Van Ryn's wagon train has arrived in his new frontier of Toronto. One of the Maple Leafs defenceman's final acts in moving north, after he was shipped by the Florida Panthers to Toronto in exchange for veteran Bryan McCabe last week, was to haul two of his quarter horses from South Florida to his aunt's farm north of London, Ont.

Pandering to U.S. teams
No, it's not your imagination. The gap between Labour Day and the official opening of NHL training camps is almost three full weeks this year, the longest in recent memory and there are a couple of reasons for it, beyond the fact the holiday falls so early this year. For starters, NHL training camps were reduced from 27 days to 20 days as part of the league's last collective bargaining agreement.

CALGARY Todd Bertuzzi was formally introduced to the Calgary media Tuesday and oddly enough the burly right-winger, who has had more than his fill of public attention was actually smiling. After stints in Florida, Detroit and Anaheim Bertuzzi, 33, says he is looking forward to playing back in Canada even with the attention that goes with it.
Crawford puts the blame on Bertuzzi

KINGSTON, Ont. Alyn McCauley always thought he'd become an accountant when his days as an NHL player came to an end. But now that a series of knee injuries have forced him into retirement at age 31, McCauley isn't quite ready to say goodbye to the game entirely.

World junior lineup in the hands of NHL clubs
OTTAWA Before Kyle Turris pulled on a jersey for Tuesday night's final red-and-white game of the national junior team's development camp, it occurred to him that it might be the last time he suits up for the program. Turris will be seeking to crack the roster of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes this fall. If successful, there's a good chance he won't be made available by the club to play for Canada at the upcoming world junior championship.
Stars switch wings with Kings
DALLAS The Dallas Stars acquired right wing Lauri Tukonen from the Los Angeles Kings for left wing Richard Clune on Monday. Tukonen was Los Angeles' first-round selection, No. 11 overall, in the 2004 draft. He has skated in five career NHL games with the Kings. Tukonen, 21, spent last season with Manchester of the AHL and had nine goals and 26 assists in 62 games. He also played in one game with the Kings.
Del Biaggio ducked due diligence: report
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has been accused of circumventing the league's customary background check on beleaguered William (Boots) Del Biaggio when he purchased a minority stake in the Nashville Predators last fall. The NHL denies the claim. According to a report in the Tennessean newspaper, California-based Canadian entrepreneur Doug Bergeron said Del Biaggio boasted that his financial statements never underwent the due diligence process that prospective NHL owners face.

A team spokesman said Murray will be introduced Thursday at an afternoon news conference at the Kings' training facility in suburban El Segundo.
The cost of doing business?
On July 22, three years will have elapsed since the NHL and the National Hockey League Players' Association ratified a collective agreement to end the exhausting 310-day lockout that cancelled the 2004-05 season. During the shutdown, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's favourite buzzwords were "cost certainty.

Habs better, but Coyotes most improved
OTTAWA The NHL sands can shift quickly these days, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the Eastern Conference, where the Montreal Canadiens are one and maybe two players better than they were before convening for the annual entry draft, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are one player worse after breaking off contract negotiations with Marian Hossa, their estimable right winger.
