Hurricanes sign prospect to three-year deal

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes think teenager Drayson Bowman might be ready to play in the NHL. The Hurriances signed Bowman to a US$2.06-million, three-year contract on Wednesday and will give him a chance to make the team in training camp. The 19-year-old had 82 points (42-40) in 66 games for the Spokane Chiefs last season before helping them win the WHL Championship.

World junior lineup in the hands of NHL clubs

OTTAWA — Before Kyle Turris pulled on a jersey for Tuesday night's final red-and-white game of the national junior team's development camp, it occurred to him that it might be the last time he suits up for the program. Turris will be seeking to crack the roster of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes this fall. If successful, there's a good chance he won't be made available by the club to play for Canada at the upcoming world junior championship.

Lightning add Recchi

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning signed veteran forward Mark Recchi to a US$1.25-million, one-year deal plus incentives as reported on TSN's website on Monday. Recchi, 40, was picked up by the Atlanta Thrashers off waivers last season from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Panthers sign Stillman

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers signed forward Cory Stillman to a three-year, $10.6 million (U.S.) deal on Tuesday, shortly after the start of NHL free agency Tuesday. "I think we've got a great fit, a player that has the ability to score some goals and a smart player," general manager Jacques Martin said. Stillman, 34, scored 24 goals and had 41 assists last season with the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes. He will earn $3.

Wesley retires after 20 seasons

RALEIGH, N.C. — For the past decade, Glen Wesley helped shepherd the Carolina Hurricanes from homeless vagabonds in North Carolina to Stanley Cup champions. Now, the last remaining original Hurricane is calling it a career. After 20 seasons in the NHL and 13 as one of the most popular faces of the Hurricanes' franchise, Wesley announced his retirement Thursday because of family reasons.

Hurricanes sign Eaves to three-year deal

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes have signed winger Patrick Eaves to a three-year contract. The Hurricanes announced Wednesday they locked up the 24-year-old forward in a deal worth about $1.4 million per year. Eaves came to Carolina from Ottawa last February in the deal that sent Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman to the Senators.

Things fall into place for Fleury

PITTSBURGH — Things are slowing down for Marc-André Fleury, according to his coach, Michel Therrien, which is good news for Therrien and the Pittsburgh Penguins because too much often came too quickly at the start of Fleury's NHL career. In June of 2003, the Penguins made the native of Sorel, Que., the first overall pick in the entry draft.

Hair we go, it's playoff time

Welcome to the fourth season. There are actually five in hockey, by a measure once offered up by no less than Wayne Gretzky. There is the exhibition season, which means nothing. There is the regular season, which runs quietly until the trade deadline. Then comes the stretch season, which ended rather dramatically last weekend. Now begins the playoff season, leading up to the Stanley Cup final, which Gretzky always considered a separate season. As season No.

Senators must respond to slap in the face

OTTAWA — What if Yogi Berra had played the Canadian game instead of the American pastime? "Hockey," he might have said, "is 90-per-cent physical — the other is half mental." Or something like that. Consider, if you will, the head games going on in Ottawa yesterday at the Senators' practice, as the team that fluked its way into the postseason on another team's demise began pumping itself up for the playoffs.

Toronto's postmortem begins in earnest

When the cold eye of blame is cast on the Toronto Maple Leafs for this NHL season, it is clear everyone from the chairman of the board down to the last player on the roster has to share the responsibility. John Ferguson, the general manager who made too many mistakes in putting together the team, already paid his price with his job. Head coach Paul Maurice, who has one year left on his contract, will probably pay the same price, if not this week, then after the new GM is hired.

Leafs relish role of spoiler

It will seem like old times tonight when the Ottawa Senators limp into the Air Canada Centre to face the host Toronto Maple Leafs. For the first time in almost four years, the Leafs are in position to end the Senators' hockey season. And don't think it doesn't mean a lot to the Leafs' players. "Hopefully, we can do a job and knock them out," centre Matt Stajan said.

Something's amiss in Ottawa

OTTAWA — Insanity has returned to Ottawa — and it has nothing to do with Parliament coming back after the Easter break. Nor is this an April Fool's joke. At least not yet.

Ovechkin sets new franchise high

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Washington Capitals brought in Viktor Kozlov at least partly to strengthen their shootout rotation. With two critical points on the line, he came through — and now they can keep thinking about finally making the playoffs again. Kozlov scored in the third round of the shootout to lead Washington past the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Murray tries again for new chemistry

OTTAWA — Chemistry is a touchy topic around here, going back to the Ottawa Senators' appearance in the Stanley Cup final last spring. The Anaheim Ducks had a relatively easy time with the Senators, winning the NHL championship in five games, because they shut down the big line of Jason Spezza and wingers Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson. When the Senators' other lines failed to take up the scoring slack, they were doomed.

Ovechkin eclipses 100 points

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Alexander Ovechkin is more focused on Washington's place in the standings than personal records. Ovechkin had a goal and two assists to lead Washington to a 4-2 win over the Predators on Tuesday night in the Capitals' first trip to Nashville in four years.
