Bettman tells Lowe, Burke to cease feud

NEW YORK — The NHL has warned feuding general managers Kevin Lowe and Brian Burke that they need to end their public dispute or face significant fines. The warning for Edmonton's Lowe and Anaheim's Burke came Monday during a conference call with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and executive vice-president Colin Campbell.

Crazy money

It's tempting to call the $57.12-million (all currency U.S.) for defenceman Brian Campbell or the $23-million for goaltender Cristobal Huet crazy money, but really, what constitutes crazy money any more in today's NHL? In a year in which the salary cap went up to a record $56.7-million – setting off another enormous spending spree on the opening day of the 2008 free-agent season – was the combined $79.

As Crosby flows,Malkin ebbs

DETROIT — Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are travelling in different directions in the NHL playoffs, which is not comforting for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the first two rounds, Malkin danced around with the puck and soon made it to the top of the scoring race. Crosby played well – just not as well as Malkin, who was the subject of adoring stories, including some from yours truly, calling him the best player in the league.

Penguins soar into finals

PITTSBURGH — Wayne Gretzky needed four NHL seasons. Mario Lemieux required seven. But Sidney Crosby was swifter than both No. 99 and No. 66. The Pittsburgh Penguins' sensational 20-year-old captain has steered his team to a Stanley Cup final in only his third season.

Roberts could return to Penguins' lineup

PITTSBURGH — There is a possibility that Gary Roberts may find his way back into the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup on Sunday. Roberts skated with his teammates at practice on Saturday and afterwards Penguins coach Michel Therrien said, "He felt pretty good and we'll make a decision tomorrow. We'll see tomorrow." Roberts, who turns 42 on Friday, missed the past two games because of a mild case of pneumonia.

Timonen will play for Flyers in Game 5

PITTSBURGH — One day after the Philadelphia Flyers expressed hope their top two defencemen will be back in the lineup on Sunday, the status of Braydon Coburn remained uncertain. While Kimmo Timonen took part in his first full practice on Saturday and declared himself fit to play against the Pittsburgh Penguins in their NHL playoff series on Sunday afternoon, Coburn was less sure.

Penguins take charge

PITTSBURGH — There were two modifications to the lineups of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers for the second game of the NHL Eastern Conference final at Mellon Arena Sunday night. The Flyers opted for more grit with rugged forward Steve Downie and Pittsburgh saw the return of sparkplug Maxime Talbot after a three-game absence because of a foot injury.

Hossa pays off in spades

PITTSBURGH — Given the dazzling displays of hockey put on in every game by Evgeni Malkin and, to a lesser extent in this series, Sidney Crosby, it was easy to overlook Marian Hossa. If he was noticed at all in this year's NHL playoffs, it was when someone was sneering at how even playing on the right wing beside Crosby did not stir Hossa to any postseason scoring exploits.

Flyers finish off Canadiens

MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens simply couldn't carry the good vibrations from their impressive regular season into the playoffs. The Canadiens had their moments in the postseason this spring, but for the most part they weren't the same team that won the franchise's first regular-season Conference title since 1988-89.

Carbonneau rolls the dice in goal

PHILADELPHIA — Choking situation? Or brilliant move — hard as it might have been for one young man in particular to swallow? At times last night, both seemed possible. Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau went far more with his gut than with his brain when he elected to go with an untried 22-year-old sophomore in goal rather than the team's 20-year-old rookie sensation.

Carbonneau keeps 'em guessing

PHILADELPHIA — Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau has everyone guessing who will be in goal tonight for the fourth game of their NHL Eastern Conference semi-final against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Missed chances cost Canadiens

MONTREAL — Philadelphia Flyers goalie Martin Biron was excellent, but his cause was significantly aided by the Montreal Canadiens lack of finish on Saturday evening. Biron made 34 saves in the Flyers' 4-2 victory to knot the second-round series 1-1. But the Canadiens have only themselves to blame because they missed plenty of glorious scoring chances, especially on the power play.

Canadiens finally put away Bruins

MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens surrounded and embraced their goaltender a little longer than usual in their postseries celebration Monday night. The Canadiens were proud of the way they rebounded as a team to claim the seventh and deciding game 5-0 against the Boston Bruins, but especially satisfied with the way their 20-year-old rookie goalie, Carey Price, responded after taking a couple of backward strides in the two previous games.

Ovechkin and Capitals force seventh game

PHILADELPHIA — Alex Ovechkin was stifled, shut down and almost silent in his first NHL playoff series. The league's leading scorer played like an MVP right on time in Game 6. Ovechkin truly was "Alexander the Great" with the Washington Capitals' season on the line and put them in prime position to win a Game 7 for only the second time in franchise history.

Biron shuts out Capitals to even series

WASHINGTON — Looking tired and frustrated, Alex Ovechkin had trouble simply getting his puck on the stick a couple of times as the game wore on. The Philadelphia Flyers had stymied him again, this time with no allowances for any late-game heroics. The Flyers shut down the favourite for league MVP, R.J.
