Red Wings to battle for Selke Trophy

NEW YORK — New Jersey Devils centre John Madden was named a finalist for the Frank Selke Trophy for a fourth time Friday, along with Detroit Red Wings forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. The award is given to the forward "who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game." Madden captured the award in 2000-01 and was runner-up in '02-03 and '03-04.

Experienced Flames to push the envelope

A season on the line

CALGARY — Jarome Iginla was talking about the value, importance and history of seventh games, but on this subject, the Calgary Flames' captain deferred to a couple of teammates — Alex Tanguay and Stephane Yelle — for one very good reason. The Flames will play a seventh game against the Sharks in San Jose Tuesday night to decide who wins their best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final series.

Devils alive thanks to Madden's OT goal

NEW YORK — John Madden scored 6:01 into overtime to get the New Jersey Devils back into their first-round series against the New York Rangers with a 4-3 victory Sunday night. New Jersey beat the Rangers for just the second time in 11 games this season, and will look to tie the series in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The series will then shift back to New Jersey on Friday.

Phaneuf looks to deliver in the playoffs

CALGARY — Cue the Dion Phaneuf highlight video and let it roll. Here's Phaneuf scoring 20 goals as a stone-faced rookie. Here's Phaneuf playing in his first NHL all-star game. Here he is in his second all-star game scoring a goal. And here's Phaneuf in his third season scoring 10 power-play goals while leading the league in most penalty minutes by a defenceman.

Sharks set to make a playoff splash

If not chairs, the air is likely to be filled with zingers and wisecracks when Don Cherry, Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury are in the room. The three hockey commentators were together not in a room, but on a conference call yesterday to promote the NHL playoffs, and it was never dull. One of the first players to get smacked down was Marian Hossa, the underachieving forward picked up by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline.

Giguere relishing the task at hand

The statistics were read to Jean-Sébastien Giguère, goaltender of the reigning Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks, and they all focused on the difficult task that lies ahead. For a variety of reasons — short summer, complacency, injuries, Stanley Cup hangover — no NHL team has been able to win back-to-back championships since the 1997 and 1998 Detroit Red Wings.

Flyers beat Penguins to secure sixth seed

PHILADELPHIA — Martin Biron stopped 20 shots in his second straight shutout and led the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday that cost the Penguins the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Atlantic Division champion Penguins played without star Sidney Crosby and looked flat for long stretches against the Flyers.

Jagr leads Rangers into playoffs

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Jaromir Jagr scored two power-play goals in a 2-minute span of the first period, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 shots, and the New York Rangers clinched an Eastern Conference playoff berth with a 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night. The Rangers entered a home-and-home series against their archrivals knowing the Islanders would enjoy nothing more than to derail their postseason plans.

Price named rookie of the month

NEW YORK — Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is the NHL rookie of the month. He posted a 7-3-0 record, 2.67 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage last month to help Montreal clinch its first division title since 1992. Price edged Edmonton Oilers centre Sam Gagner, Washington Capitals centre Nicklas Backstrom, Chicago Blackhawks right-winger Patrick Kane and Los Angeles Kings goaltender Eric Ersberg for the award.

Sabres still in the hunt

TORONTO — The Buffalo Sabres could be eliminated from playoff contention by the time they line up for their game against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre tomorrow. But the Sabres' 4-3 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre last night kept their slim playoff hopes alive for another 24 hours.

Devils clinch playoff berth

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Zach Parise deflected in Johnny Oduya's shot 29 seconds into overtime for the New Jersey Devils, who clinched an Eastern Conference playoff berth with a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. The Devils strengthened their hold on fourth place in the East and stayed alive in the race for the Atlantic Division title.

Penguins will have to wait to clinch

NEW YORK — Chris Drury faces overtime the same way he handles the first minute of a game. That could explain why he seems to be in the right place at the most crucial times. Drury scored a power-play goal 1:46 into overtime, giving the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday night. Drury has scored in overtime four times and has notched 44 NHL game-winners, including seven this season — his first with the Rangers.

Young bucks show their stuff

The Toronto Maple Leafs' current roster doesn't have a bright future, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president Richard Peddie said in an interview with Hockey Night in Canada before the Leafs' game with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. "Actually, I look at this team and I can't see we're making any progress towards winning a Stanley Cup," Peddie told Elliotte Friedman.

Penguins playoff-bound

NEWARK, N.J. — Bouncing back from a bad game and putting themselves in position to be the top seed in the Eastern Conference was more exciting for the Pittsburgh Penguins than making the playoffs.
