Leafs have enough for shot at Tavares
With the Toronto Maple Leafs looking like they may finally settle to the bottom five in the NHL, one's thoughts turn to how they can take some big steps in their rebuilding plan. Keep in mind Brian Burke, the club's president and general manager, likes to make bold moves at the NHL entry draft.
Kariya to undergo hip surgery
ST. LOUIS St. Louis Blues left wing Paul Kariya will have surgery on his left hip and could miss the rest of the season, the latest hit for a franchise beset by injuries to key players. The 34-year-old Kariya hasn't played since Nov. 5 in Anaheim, when his body was wrenched by a hit from behind and he tore muscle fibres near the top of his thigh.
Wilson targets Stempniak, Kulemin
UNIONDALE, N.Y. One saving grace for those having to watch a post-Christmas game between the worst team in the NHL, the New York Islanders, and one that can be on certain nights, the Toronto Maple Leafs, is the diversion provided by Ron Wilson. The Leafs' head coach is a great one for playing his own version of reward and punishment, yanking players back and forth from the depths of the fourth line for on-ice transgressions.
Toronto's goalie of the future gets his chance
ATLANTA Even though Justin Pogge's promotion was expected, the move has raised some eyebrows. Pogge, 22, was called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday to replace injured Vesa Toskala, who once again is battling a sore groin. Pogge, of Penticton, B.C., will make his NHL debut against the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday. Toskala returned to Toronto to rest.
Iginla powers Flames to victory
ST. LOUIS Two early goals by Jarome Iginla started a big night of offence for the Calgary Flames, who overpowered the St. Louis Blues to end a three-game losing streak. Blues coach Andy Murray was more impressed with one of Iginla's assists, a cross-ice pass to Mike Cammalleri for a power-play goal that broke open Calgary's 6-3 victory Tuesday.
Flames keen on Euro trip
The NHL will not announce plans for next year's season opener in Europe for another month or so, but at least three clubs have expressed interest in going, including one from Canada, the Calgary Flames. And while the Toronto Maple Leafs are not a candidate for 2009, they would be a leading contender to open the season abroad in 2010, one NHL source said yesterday.
Sharks continue torrid tear
LOS ANGELES Ryane Clowe scored a power-play goal in the first period and got the deciding goal in the shootout and the San Jose Sharks topped the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Monday night. Patrick Marleau tied the score with a shorthanded goal in the second period. The Sharks, who have the NHL's best record, improved to 25-3-2 with their 12th victory in 13 games and 19th in the past 22.
Leafs find ways to pick up penalty kill
TORONTO Two months into their tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team's coaching staff is finally starting to like what it sees on the penalty kill. Dead last in the category in late November, the Leafs have slowly risen to 27th in the NHL with a 77.8-per-cent success rate, the result of a significant recent improvement. In the eight games since an ugly 6-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers on Nov.
Stempniak finding comfort zone
The first time Toronto Maple Leafs forward Lee Stempniak watched his hometown Buffalo Sabres live and in person, an X marked the spot. About the only recollection Stempniak, who grew up in nearby West Seneca, has of his first Sabres game was that his minor hockey team took to the ice at the soon-to-be demolished Memorial Auditorium between periods and that he had a giant X taped on the top of his helmet. "I was only 7 at the time," Stempniak remembered.
Oilers come from behind to beat Blues
ST. LOUIS After allowing two goals on the first six shots, Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson knew it was time to bear down and give his teammates a chance to get back into the game. Roloson made key saves after allowing two first-period goals, and the Oilers responded with four unanswered goals in a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday afternoon.
Canadiens get back on track
ST. LOUIS With the game on the line, the Montreal Canadiens relied on Alexei Kovalev to put the finishing touches on a victory. He did just that, too, scoring the lone goal in a shootout to give the Canadiens a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night. Kovalev beat Manny Legace with a high backhander on Montreal's third shootout attempt after the Blues missed on all three of their shots in the tiebreaker.
Blues return Pietrangelo to juniors
ST. LOUIS The St. Louis Blues returned promising rookie defenseman Alex Pietrangelo to his junior team. The 18-year-old Pietrangelo was the fourth overall pick in the draft. He played eight games with St. Louis, recording an assist and an even plus-minus rating. The Blues could use Pietrangelo in nine games before his season counted as a full year. Instead, he'll be with the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League.
Crosby to suit up
ST. LOUIS Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby plans to play against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night despite suffering an undisclosed injury in his previous game, according to the team's website. Crosby was hurt during Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, leaving after two shifts in the third period when he felt "discomfort." He was listed as day-to-day but skated in Saturday's morning skate.
Leafs' Hollweg suspended
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Hollweg has been automatically suspended for the first two games of the regular season. The suspension is a result of being assessed a third game misconduct for checking from behind within 41 games. Hollweg hit St. Louis Blues defenceman Jay McKee from behind with 1:38 remaining in the third period of Toronto's 7-3 loss to the Blues in St. Louis last Wednesday.
Blues sign Pietrangelo
ST. LOUIS The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, the fourth overall pick in the June draft, on Thursday. The 18-year-old Pietrangelo will get a chance to make the team when training camp begins Sept. 19. "We are excited to have Alex signed as he will be a key component to our youth movement for years to come," team president John Davidson said.
