COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason will miss the next 4 to 6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday. Report: Legein quitting hockey
Stefan Legein, the Columbus Blue Jackets second-round pick in the 2007 NHL entry draft, has decided to quit hockey. The cost of doing business?
On July 22, three years will have elapsed since the NHL and the National Hockey League Players' Association ratified a collective agreement to end the exhausting 310-day lockout that cancelled the 2004-05 season. During the shutdown, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's favourite buzzwords were "cost certainty.

Oilers keep dealing
Erik Cole knows a little bit about how life in Edmonton can be when things go well for their NHL team. Cole was a spectator for two games and a participant in one game back in 2006, when the Oilers played the Carolina Hurricanes for the Stanley Cup. The atmosphere was electric, the town alive. Cole mentioned that even in the restaurants, on off nights, the Hurricanes could sense what it was like to be in a hockey environment, playing for a championship.

Habs better, but Coyotes most improved
OTTAWA The NHL sands can shift quickly these days, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the Eastern Conference, where the Montreal Canadiens are one and maybe two players better than they were before convening for the annual entry draft, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are one player worse after breaking off contract negotiations with Marian Hossa, their estimable right winger.
With draft over, attention turns to free agents
OTTAWA Having drafted what they hope are tomorrow's stars, the NHL's 30 general managers now turn their full attention to retaining some of their current ones. Convincing those players to forgo the July 1 free-agent bonanza is another matter. "We're all finding out right now that it seems to be hard to sign players," Minnesota Wild GM Doug Risebrough said over the weekend.
Clowe comes back with a bang
SAN JOSE That Ryan Clowe would steal the show for the San Jose Sharks on the opening night of the playoffs may have been a surprise on one level only. After missing all but 15 games of the regular season following major reconstructive knee surgery, Clowe appeared in only four games for the Sharks prior to the start of the playoffs.
Hair we go, it's playoff time
Welcome to the fourth season. There are actually five in hockey, by a measure once offered up by no less than Wayne Gretzky. There is the exhibition season, which means nothing. There is the regular season, which runs quietly until the trade deadline. Then comes the stretch season, which ended rather dramatically last weekend. Now begins the playoff season, leading up to the Stanley Cup final, which Gretzky always considered a separate season. As season No.
Red Wings secure Presidents' Trophy
DETROIT Although it was almost inevitable, the Detroit Red Wings wanted to get it done. Henrik Zetterberg wrapped up the Presidents' Trophy for Detroit, scoring with 11 seconds left to rally the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night. With 113 points, the Red Wings took the Presidents' Trophy as the regular-season points leaders and earned home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Nash's availability for worlds in doubt
The results of minor throat surgery will determine whether Rick Nash will be part of the team that defends Canada's gold medal at the IIHF World Hockey Championship. The Columbus Blue Jackets star was named MVP at last year's tournament in Moscow and would like to be part of the Canadian team at next month's event in Halifax and Quebec City.
Norrena shuts out Flames
COLUMBUS, Ohio Backup goalie Fredrik Norrena helped preserve Columbus' slim playoff hopes. Norrena made 18 saves for his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career and the Blue Jackets beat the Calgary Flames 3-0 Tuesday night for their second straight win. "He was really sound," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "The thing that was impressive for me was the no rebounds.
Rangers roaring towards playoffs
The Kitchener Rangers ignored their automatic berth in the Memorial Cup as host team and put together a 53-win season, which was more than any other club in the Canadian Hockey League. The Western, Ontario and Quebec major junior leagues all commence playoffs this week.
Kiprusoff leads Flames back to the summit
CALGARY The old Miikka Kiprusoff is back, although this one is a little bit more rested. Craig Conroy scored in the third period and Kiprusoff made 39 saves as the Calgary Flames climbed back into a tie for first place in the NHL's Northwest Division with a 1-0 victory Tuesday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was the second shutout of the season for Kiprusoff, who improves to 33-20-9.
