Wolski to agrees to two-year deal with Avs
DENVER The Colorado Avalanche re-signed restricted free-agent forward Wojtek Wolski to a two-year contract on Wednesday. The 22-year-old native of Poland had 48 points, including 18 goals, last season. He had six game-winning goals and was 4-for-8 in shootout attempts. Wolski was the club's top draft choice in 2004 and was the fourth-leading scorer among rookies in the NHL in the 2006-07 season.
Fletcher forced to defend Finger
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher had his knuckles rapped for signing free-agent defenceman Jeff Finger Tuesday. Moments after Finger's deal for four years and $14-million (all currency U.S.) was announced, analysts scrutinizing the moves made on the opening day of NHL free agency scratched their heads as to why Fletcher would pay the 28-year-old former Colorado Avalanche blueliner with just 94 NHL games of experience an average salary of $3.5-million.
Coyotes sign Sauer to four-year deal
GLENDALE, Ariz. The Phoenix Coyotes signed veteran defenseman Kurt Sauer to a four-year contract Tuesday, filling a gap created when they sent a pair of defenders to the Florida Panthers in a draft-day trade for Olli Jokinen. Sauer, 27, played for the Colorado Avalanche last season, and had a goal and five assists in 54 regular-season games. He added a goal in 10 postseason contests with Colorado.
Maple Leafs bring back Joseph
TORONTO To no one's surprise the Toronto Maple Leafs have brought to the fold goaltender Curtis Joseph. In a potential move that was reported by the Globe and Mail last Wednesday, the 41-year-old Joseph has signed a one-year, $700,000 (all currency U.S.) deal and will backup Vesa Toskala this season.
Maple Leafs give Finger four-year deal
TORONTO Journeyman defenceman Jeff Finger was in the ECHL the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs made the playoffs. After signing him to a $14-million (U.S.), four-year deal on Tuesday, the Maple Leafs team are hoping that Finger can help get them back to the post-season. Finger spent parts of the past two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. He earned the league-minimum salary of $475,000 last season.
Dithering continues in Sundin camp
Mats Sundin is following the same path as his former teammate, Joe Sakic. Again. Last summer, when Sundin re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one season instead of a two-or three-year pact, the Swede compared his situation to that of Sakic.
Report: Avs re-sign defencemen Liles, Foote
TORONTO The Colorado Avalanche have re-signed defencemen John-Michael Liles and Adam Foote, TSN reported on its website Sunday. Citing an unnamed source, TSN reported that Liles and the Avalanche have agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth an average of slightly more than $4-million per year. Liles was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday. The deal is likely to be formally announced Monday.
Sakic considering retirement
DENVER Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic hasn't decided yet whether to return to the team for his 20th season or retire. Team spokesman Jean Martineau said Saturday that Sakic met with general manager Francois Giguere. He said Sakic wasn't ready to make a decision about his future. Martineau said Giguere told Sakic to take the time he needs and he didn't expect a decision very soon.
Avalanche have question marks in goal
DENVER Just two weeks ago, Jose Theodore sheepishly was fending off comparisons to Hall of Famer Patrick Roy that were coming at him fast and furious like so many shots from the Minnesota Wild. Now, he's sick and the Colorado Avalanche are ailing. Theodore has been pulled in each of the Avs' two losses in the Western Conference semi-final series at Detroit, where he surrendered eight goals in less than four periods.
Franzen's hat trick leads Red Wings to win
DETROIT The Mule-led Detroit Red Wings are kicking the Colorado Avalanche when they're down. Johan Franzen scored three times to lift Detroit to a 5-1 victory Saturday over the banged-up Avs, giving the NHL's top-seeded team a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal.
Experienced Flames to push the envelope
A season on the line
CALGARY Jarome Iginla was talking about the value, importance and history of seventh games, but on this subject, the Calgary Flames' captain deferred to a couple of teammates Alex Tanguay and Stephane Yelle for one very good reason. The Flames will play a seventh game against the Sharks in San Jose Tuesday night to decide who wins their best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final series.
Theodore comes up big as Avs clinch series
DENVER Jose Theodore and the Colorado Avalanche withstood another onslaught from the relentless Minnesota Wild for a series-clinching 2-1 win Saturday night. Theodore stopped 34 shots, including a glove save off Kim Johnsson's shot with 21 seconds left and the Avs took the series in six games.
Captain Clutch comes through for Avs
ST. PAUL, Minn. Joe Sakic added another line to his amazing playoff resume. Sakic tipped in a shot by Ruslan Salei from the point midway through the first overtime period, his eighth career playoff goal in extra time, to send the Colorado Avalanche past the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Wednesday night. The goal came at 11:11 of OT and gave Colorado a 1-0 lead in this first-round series. Game 2 is at Minnesota on Friday.
Wild must counter Avalanche experience
ST. PAUL, Minn. Beaten up last April by the eventual NHL champions, the Minnesota Wild have some playoff experience to build on a year later. A couple of their top offensive players, Marian Gaborik and Pierre-Marc Bouchard, were even around when they made that improbable run to the Western Conference finals in 2003.
