Lions star looks south
It's been a long time since a defensive player in the CFL caused the kind of stir Cameron Wake has the past two seasons. Though his CFL career has been brief, his list of accomplishments is long. The B.C. Lions defensive end is the only CFL player to be chosen rookie of the year and defensive player of the year in the same season.
Ticats drop another close game
EDMONTON This script the supporters of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats already know by heart. Casey Printers giveth, and Casey Printers taketh away. Jesse Lumsden shows a bit of his speed and power, and then finishes the game on the sidelines, hurt once more.
Turnovers costly as Lions top Ticats
HAMILTON With both teams at the bottom of their respective divisions, the B.C. Lions and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were already in desperate situations just midway through the season, both fighting to stay close to their division rivals. It was the Lions who looked serious about the challenge, soundly defeating the Tabbies 35-12 in front of 18,723 disgruntled fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Saturday.
First-half frustration boils over at practice
SURREY, B.C. When it happens at training camp between two anonymous hopefuls, you call it hungry players fighting for jobs. When it happens during the season between a mouthy receiver and a lippy defensive back, you call it two teammates who are sick of facing each other. But when it happens midseason between two team captains, you call it something else.
Roberts powers Bombers to victory
WINNIPEG Kevin Glenn knows he didn't play a perfect game, but it was good enough to give the Winnipeg Blue Bombers their second victory of the season. With the Bombers quarterback calling all but one or two plays in his first start in four games, running back Charles Roberts notched a pair of touchdowns and his first 100-yard game of the CFL season as Winnipeg downed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 37-24 Thursday night.
Bombers turn back the clock
WINNIPEG For the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers, everything old is new again. At 1-6, the Bombers hope reinstating starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and veteran receiver Milt Stegall, who was out with a sore knee, will be the necessary spark to snag a win Thursday when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5). "There's still opportunity for us, and there's still time to wake up," said Bombers head coach Doug Berry.
Referee punished
The CFL official who incorrectly claimed to have seen Calgary Stampeders linebacker JoJuan Armour push over an umpire during a game two weeks ago resulting in Armour's ejection will not be involved in any more games this season. Henry Chiu had been a side judge for veteran head referee Jake Ireland's crew during the first half of this season.
Not-so-premium game at a premium price
TORONTO Just days before the eight-games-in-five-years Buffalo Bills in Toronto series kicks off, there is much debate as what to make of it all. Sluggish ticket sales, a somewhat cynical marketplace and a team of mostly no-names haven't exactly made the Bills the talk of the town. And that's led to suggestions this whole NFL-in-Toronto thing was just a little overhyped in the first place.
Dawson watch goes on for Argos
The Toronto Argonauts drafted Canadian running back Clifton Dawson in 2006 knowing they'd have to be patient to get him into their uniform. They're going to have to wait a little longer now. Two CFL sources requesting anonymity said Tuesday the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed the former Harvard star after releasing him prior to their 23-20 overtime exhibition loss to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night.
Canadian released from Indianapolis Colts
Canadian running back Clifton Dawson has been released by the Indianapolis Colts. The five-foot-10, 212-pound Toronto native was entering his second season with Indianapolis. But when Dawson arrived at camp he found a surplus of running backs on the Colts roster looking to become the club's backup behind incumbent Joseph Addai.
Banged-up Ticats prepare for Argo test
HAMILTON One-third of the way through this CFL season, it appears things couldn't be going worse for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Ticats enter tonight's game against the Toronto Argonauts at Ivor Wynne Stadium at 1-5 and are missing their starting quarterback, running back and primary big-play receiver.
Roughriders continue to roll
They're atop the West Division standings and are the CFL's only undefeated team. But it seems the more the Saskatchewan Roughriders win, the more injuries they have to deal with. The defending Grey Cup champions improved to 6-0 last week with a close 22-21 road win over the Calgary Stampeders. But the Riders also lost four more players to injury, including receivers Matt Dominguez (knee) and Carl Berman (Achilles tendon) and fullback Neal Hughes (leg).
Calvillo passes 300 in win
MONTREAL Pleased as he was to achieve his latest milestone accomplishment, Anthony Calvillo has bigger goals in sight for the Montreal Alouettes. Calvillo became the fourth quarterback in CFL history to reach 300 career touchdown passes as Montreal ended a three-game losing streak with a 40-33 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday night.
The West's winning ways
Take a look at the CFL standings and it's clear to see where the league's power base is. All four West Division teams have winning records led by the Saskatchewan Roughriders' perfect 5-0 mark. But Edmonton, Calgary and B.C. are all tied for second at 3-2. Compare that to the East Division, where both Montreal and Toronto are tied for top spot with 2-3 records. Hamilton and Winnipeg are tied for third at 1-4.
Practice doesn't make perfect
HAMILTON Opportunity knocked, but the Hamilton Tiger-Cats couldn't answer. Instead, the Ticats wasted a valiant defensive effort against the high-powered Edmonton Eskimos in a 19-13 defeat that landed them in a tie with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for last place in the CFL's East Division at 1-4.
