Eskimos stay perfect at home
EDMONTON Kamau Peterson's second quarter touchdown catch helped Edmonton erase an early deficit and they never looked back. The Eskimos moved into sole possession of second place in the CFL's West Division, knocking off the league-leading Saskatchewan Roughriders 27-10 on Thursday night. With the win the Esks improved to 5-3, two points up on both B.C. and Calgary who will face off against each other in Vancouver on Friday.
'Riders continue to battle injuries
EDMONTON Thursday night's matchup between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos will feature two teams desperately hoping to get the stretch runs of their respective seasons off to a good start.
Bombers turn back the clock
WINNIPEG For the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers, everything old is new again. At 1-6, the Bombers hope reinstating starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and veteran receiver Milt Stegall, who was out with a sore knee, will be the necessary spark to snag a win Thursday when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5). "There's still opportunity for us, and there's still time to wake up," said Bombers head coach Doug Berry.
Referee punished
The CFL official who incorrectly claimed to have seen Calgary Stampeders linebacker JoJuan Armour push over an umpire during a game two weeks ago resulting in Armour's ejection will not be involved in any more games this season. Henry Chiu had been a side judge for veteran head referee Jake Ireland's crew during the first half of this season.
Dawson watch goes on for Argos
The Toronto Argonauts drafted Canadian running back Clifton Dawson in 2006 knowing they'd have to be patient to get him into their uniform. They're going to have to wait a little longer now. Two CFL sources requesting anonymity said Tuesday the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed the former Harvard star after releasing him prior to their 23-20 overtime exhibition loss to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night.
Roughriders continue to roll
They're atop the West Division standings and are the CFL's only undefeated team. But it seems the more the Saskatchewan Roughriders win, the more injuries they have to deal with. The defending Grey Cup champions improved to 6-0 last week with a close 22-21 road win over the Calgary Stampeders. But the Riders also lost four more players to injury, including receivers Matt Dominguez (knee) and Carl Berman (Achilles tendon) and fullback Neal Hughes (leg).
'Riders hold on for another win
CALGARY The Saskatchewan Roughriders walked into their locker-room with 21 points at halftime and would need every last one to hold off the Calgary Stampeders for a 22-21 win Saturday night. Stampeders kicker Sandro DeAngelis missed a 54-yard field goal with no time remaining on the clock as the Roughriders held on for the win.
Tillman hit with another fine
For the third time in 10 months, the CFL has fined Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Eric Tillman. The league announced yesterday it was fining Tillman $2,500 for comments made July 21 to a Regina radio station regarding the league's salary management system. Tillman criticized how the salaries of injured players count against the $4.2-million spending limit.
The West's winning ways
Take a look at the CFL standings and it's clear to see where the league's power base is. All four West Division teams have winning records led by the Saskatchewan Roughriders' perfect 5-0 mark. But Edmonton, Calgary and B.C. are all tied for second at 3-2. Compare that to the East Division, where both Montreal and Toronto are tied for top spot with 2-3 records. Hamilton and Winnipeg are tied for third at 1-4.
Conquering hero Joseph returns to Regina
While Toronto Argonauts quarterback Kerry Joseph's return to Saskatchewan might not be a love-in, the Roughriders aren't expecting the air at Mosaic Field to be filled with animosity toward him tomorrow night, either. After all, just more than four months after Joseph's contract dispute with Saskatchewan ended with a surprise trade, things are going quite well in the Prairies.
Glenn pays for winless start
They were on the doorstep a year ago, but now they're in the basement. At least for now, quarterback Kevin Glenn is taking the fall for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' 0-4 start. The Bombers have opted to go with Ryan Dinwiddie at quarterback when the Calgary Stampeders come to Winnipeg for a game Thursday.
Eiben expected to miss two weeks
TORONTO Toronto Argonauts linebacker Kevin Eiben is expected to be out for at least two weeks due to a sprained medial collateral ligament. The 28-year-old native of Delta, B.C., suffered the right knee injury in Toronto's 35-31 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday. A team spokesperson confirmed the news Monday. Eiben, a CFL all-star last season, has 19 tackles and one sack this season.
Dozen on the dial
All times Eastern 1 BRITISH OPEN Without Tiger Woods in the field, the story so far at this year's British Open has been the weather: rain, cold and wicked winds. Black rain suits and tuques have been the standard uniform at Royal Birkdale. Open organizers really ought to hold the tournament in the summer. It would make golf's best event that much better. Jarious Jackson, Lumsden win CFL honours
Jarious Jackson, Javier Glatt, Tristan Jackson and Jesse Lumsden were named the CFL Players of the Week on Tuesday. B.C.'s Jarious Jackson took the offensive player award by leading the Lions to a big victory on the road in Winnipeg. Jackson was 19-for-24 (79.2 per cent) for 340 yards and a league-high five touchdown passes with only one interception. Jackson also ran twice for 18 yards. On the season, Jackson is 43-of-72 (59.
Argonauts take first step to clean up quarterback mess
The Toronto Argonauts' move this week to put veteran quarterback Michael Bishop on waivers doesn't mean his days with the CFL team are necessarily over. But it is a strong indication the Argos are getting around to dealing with a situation that's been an uncomfortable and unrealistic fit since the day they traded for Kerry Joseph in March.
