Turnovers costly as Lions top Ticats
HAMILTON With both teams at the bottom of their respective divisions, the B.C. Lions and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were already in desperate situations just midway through the season, both fighting to stay close to their division rivals. It was the Lions who looked serious about the challenge, soundly defeating the Tabbies 35-12 in front of 18,723 disgruntled fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Saturday.
Ray powers comeback
EDMONTON Ricky Ray ran in two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Edmonton Eskimos fought back to win their second game in a row, defeating the B.C. Lions 35-24 on Thursday night. The victory put the Eskimos into sole possession of second place in the CFL's West Division at 4-2.
Eskimos may get visit from Tucker
EDMONTON The Edmonton Eskimos could get an inspirational lift Thursday when they host the B.C. Lions at Commonwealth Stadium as receiver Jason Tucker, who cracked his spine in a helmet-to-helmet hit in Hamilton, is coming home. "It would be tremendous just to see him walk through the locker-room," Eskimos head coach Danny Maciocia said Wednesday.
Tillman hit with another fine
For the third time in 10 months, the CFL has fined Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Eric Tillman. The league announced yesterday it was fining Tillman $2,500 for comments made July 21 to a Regina radio station regarding the league's salary management system. Tillman criticized how the salaries of injured players count against the $4.2-million spending limit.
The West's winning ways
Take a look at the CFL standings and it's clear to see where the league's power base is. All four West Division teams have winning records led by the Saskatchewan Roughriders' perfect 5-0 mark. But Edmonton, Calgary and B.C. are all tied for second at 3-2. Compare that to the East Division, where both Montreal and Toronto are tied for top spot with 2-3 records. Hamilton and Winnipeg are tied for third at 1-4.
Stampeders cut five
CALGARY Defensive end Anthony Gargiulo's days with the Calgary Stampeders are over. Gargiulo was among five players released Tuesday by the Stampeders. Also let go were receiver Chris Jackson, defensive back Willie Byrd, receiver Greg Hetherington and defensive tackle Marcus Parker. Parker was added to the club's practice roster. Jabari Levey, a six-foot-five, 310-pound offensive tackle has joined the Stampeders.
Conquering hero Joseph returns to Regina
While Toronto Argonauts quarterback Kerry Joseph's return to Saskatchewan might not be a love-in, the Roughriders aren't expecting the air at Mosaic Field to be filled with animosity toward him tomorrow night, either. After all, just more than four months after Joseph's contract dispute with Saskatchewan ended with a surprise trade, things are going quite well in the Prairies.
Calvillo's back in top form to take on the Lions
VANCOUVER On the field tonight, Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo and B.C. Lions safety Barron Miles will be opponents as their 2-2 CFL teams clash at B.C. Place Stadium. Off the field, Calvillo and Miles, a former Alouette, remain close friends, spending time together in the off-season with their families and staging football camps around Montreal.
Smith goes own way while on sidelines
SURREY, B.C. The B.C. Lions specifically scheduled a ceremony celebrating the life of their late president and chief executive, Bob Ackles, last week so that coaches and players could participate, yet star back Joe Smith opted to stay home. Injured Smith spent last Friday's 27-18 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers shopping with his wife and reading a book, not at the B.C. Place Stadium, where the game and ceremony were taking place.
Joseph returns to Regina on a roll
Kerry Joseph is returning to Regina on a roll. Joseph leads the Toronto Argonauts into Saskatchewan to face the undefeated Roughriders, the same team Joseph guided to a Grey Cup title last year after being named the CFL's outstanding player. The Roughriders traded Joseph to Toronto in the off-season after being unable to agree to a contract extension with the veteran quarterback.
Glenn pays for winless start
They were on the doorstep a year ago, but now they're in the basement. At least for now, quarterback Kevin Glenn is taking the fall for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' 0-4 start. The Bombers have opted to go with Ryan Dinwiddie at quarterback when the Calgary Stampeders come to Winnipeg for a game Thursday.
Als release Armstead, Kizer
MONTREAL The Montreal Alouettes signed former Toronto cornerback Khalil Carter on Monday and released two of the goats from a loss in Saskatchewan on the weekend kick returner Jason Armstead and defensive back Rayshaun Kizer. Carter was released late in training camp by the Argonauts a day after an on-field argument with coach Rich Stubler.
Joseph rallies Argos to win
TORONTO Kerry Joseph needed a performance like this. For the first three games of the Toronto Argonauts season, Joseph was embroiled in a quarterback controversy with Michael Bishop and struggled to return to the form that brought him both CFL most valuable player honours and a Grey Cup with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year.
Lions roar for Ackles
VANCOUVER As spectacles go, Bob Ackles would have loved every drop of it. As games go, he would have sweated it out like the rest of the B.C. Lions. The Lions were not at their best during a Canadian Football League game to commemorate their late club president and chief executive, who passed suddenly on July 6 at 69, but B.C.
Stamps hand Trestman first loss
MONTREAL In a battle of the CFL's top two offensive clubs, it was the Calgary Stampeders defence that came out on top. Joffrey Reynolds and Ken-Yon Rambo scored touchdowns and Sandro DeAngelis went 3-for-4 on field goals as the Stampeders held Montreal to only two points in the second half of a 23-19 victory over the Alouettes on Thursday night.
