Aerial attack decimates Edmonton
MONTREAL As statements of intent go, it fell some distance short of subtle. From the moment quarterback Anthony Calvillo took his first snap Sunday, it was evident the Montreal Alouettes would be airing the ball out early and often against the Edmonton Eskimos. And heave it Calvillo did, opening the game with seven consecutive passing plays to march his CFL team for a field goal on its initial drive, going 5-for-7 for 59 yards in the process.
Ticats drop another close game
EDMONTON This script the supporters of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats already know by heart. Casey Printers giveth, and Casey Printers taketh away. Jesse Lumsden shows a bit of his speed and power, and then finishes the game on the sidelines, hurt once more.
Dickenson sidelined by another concussion
Calgary When Dave Dickenson said he was feeling woozy on Monday afternoon, the Calgary Stampeders feared the worst. Yesterday, those fears were confirmed. Dickenson, the team's hard-luck quarterback, suffered another concussion on Labour Day and has been placed on the CFL team's nine-game injured list. That means the earliest Dickenson could play again would be in the playoffs, assuming the Stampeders get that far.
'Riders continue to battle injuries
EDMONTON Thursday night's matchup between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos will feature two teams desperately hoping to get the stretch runs of their respective seasons off to a good start.
Roughriders continue to roll
They're atop the West Division standings and are the CFL's only undefeated team. But it seems the more the Saskatchewan Roughriders win, the more injuries they have to deal with. The defending Grey Cup champions improved to 6-0 last week with a close 22-21 road win over the Calgary Stampeders. But the Riders also lost four more players to injury, including receivers Matt Dominguez (knee) and Carl Berman (Achilles tendon) and fullback Neal Hughes (leg).
Ray powers comeback
EDMONTON Ricky Ray ran in two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Edmonton Eskimos fought back to win their second game in a row, defeating the B.C. Lions 35-24 on Thursday night. The victory put the Eskimos into sole possession of second place in the CFL's West Division at 4-2.
Eskimos may get visit from Tucker
EDMONTON The Edmonton Eskimos could get an inspirational lift Thursday when they host the B.C. Lions at Commonwealth Stadium as receiver Jason Tucker, who cracked his spine in a helmet-to-helmet hit in Hamilton, is coming home. "It would be tremendous just to see him walk through the locker-room," Eskimos head coach Danny Maciocia said Wednesday.
Eskimos re-sign Prator to replace Tucker
EDMONTON Greg Prator is back with the Edmonton Eskimos. The CFL club re-signed the import receiver Monday, just over a month after releasing him. Prator went to training camp with Edmonton before being let go June 21. But he gets a second chance with the Eskimos after veteran Jason Tucker suffered a season-ending neck injury during Friday night's 19-13 road win in Hamilton.
Hoag still trying to catch on
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Journeyman receiver Ryan Hoag has been cut 10 times trying to make rosters in the NFL, the CFL and the AFL. He was even one of the first guys axed from the reality television series "The Bachelorette" in May. Despite all the rejection, the final pick of the 2003 NFL draft refuses to give up his dream of playing professional football.
Eskimos' Tucker to have season-ending surgery
HAMILTON The Edmonton Eskimos will have to make do the rest of their season without star receiver Jason Tucker. The CFL club announced Saturday that Tucker, 32, will undergo season-ending neck surgery within the next two days after being injured during Edmonton's 19-13 road win in Hamilton on Friday night. Tucker was hurt on the final play of the third quarter after colliding with Tiger-Cats defensive back Jykine Bradley.
Humble Jackson brings Southern heat
Star kick returners are often stereotyped as me-first players who love the spotlight, love to talk and are as renowned for their end-zone celebrations as they are for what gets them there. Not Tristan Jackson of the Edmonton Eskimos. Not by a long shot. Jackson, the CFL's breakout star early this season, just might be the most polite, understated and unselfish football player on the planet.
Joseph returns to Regina on a roll
Kerry Joseph is returning to Regina on a roll. Joseph leads the Toronto Argonauts into Saskatchewan to face the undefeated Roughriders, the same team Joseph guided to a Grey Cup title last year after being named the CFL's outstanding player. The Roughriders traded Joseph to Toronto in the off-season after being unable to agree to a contract extension with the veteran quarterback.
Eiben expected to miss two weeks
TORONTO Toronto Argonauts linebacker Kevin Eiben is expected to be out for at least two weeks due to a sprained medial collateral ligament. The 28-year-old native of Delta, B.C., suffered the right knee injury in Toronto's 35-31 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday. A team spokesperson confirmed the news Monday. Eiben, a CFL all-star last season, has 19 tackles and one sack this season.
Joseph rallies Argos to win
TORONTO Kerry Joseph needed a performance like this. For the first three games of the Toronto Argonauts season, Joseph was embroiled in a quarterback controversy with Michael Bishop and struggled to return to the form that brought him both CFL most valuable player honours and a Grey Cup with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year.
Reynolds runs over Ticats
CALGARY A few Calgary Stampeders gained higher standing in the club's history books during a 43-16 romp over the visiting Hamilton Tigers-Cats on Thursday. Joffrey Reynolds ran for three touchdowns for the first time in his career and became the sixth Stampeder to rush for over 5,000 career yards. Nik Lewis's two 16-yard touchdown catches helped catapult him into eighth all-time in receptions and receiving yards in club history.
