Argos, Bombers to have retro look

The CFL often touts its history. Now it's going to wear it. The league will follow the lead of other major-league sports on Sept. 12 when the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers sport retro uniforms reflective of the 1950 Grey Cup game, known as the "Mud Bowl" and played at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The Argos will also try to adapt the Rogers Centre to a 1950s theme for the game, as much as that is possible in an artificial turf stadium built in the late 1980s.

Roberts powers Bombers to victory

WINNIPEG — Kevin Glenn knows he didn't play a perfect game, but it was good enough to give the Winnipeg Blue Bombers their second victory of the season. With the Bombers quarterback calling all but one or two plays in his first start in four games, running back Charles Roberts notched a pair of touchdowns and his first 100-yard game of the CFL season as Winnipeg downed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 37-24 Thursday night.

Bombers turn back the clock

WINNIPEG — For the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers, everything old is new again. At 1-6, the Bombers hope reinstating starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and veteran receiver Milt Stegall, who was out with a sore knee, will be the necessary spark to snag a win Thursday when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5). "There's still opportunity for us, and there's still time to wake up," said Bombers head coach Doug Berry.

Referee punished

The CFL official who incorrectly claimed to have seen Calgary Stampeders linebacker JoJuan Armour push over an umpire during a game two weeks ago — resulting in Armour's ejection — will not be involved in any more games this season. Henry Chiu had been a side judge for veteran head referee Jake Ireland's crew during the first half of this season.

Dawson watch goes on for Argos

The Toronto Argonauts drafted Canadian running back Clifton Dawson in 2006 knowing they'd have to be patient to get him into their uniform. They're going to have to wait a little longer now. Two CFL sources requesting anonymity said Tuesday the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed the former Harvard star after releasing him prior to their 23-20 overtime exhibition loss to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night.

Banged-up Ticats prepare for Argo test

HAMILTON — One-third of the way through this CFL season, it appears things couldn't be going worse for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Ticats enter tonight's game against the Toronto Argonauts at Ivor Wynne Stadium at 1-5 and are missing their starting quarterback, running back and primary big-play receiver.

The West's winning ways

Take a look at the CFL standings and it's clear to see where the league's power base is. All four West Division teams have winning records led by the Saskatchewan Roughriders' perfect 5-0 mark. But Edmonton, Calgary and B.C. are all tied for second at 3-2. Compare that to the East Division, where both Montreal and Toronto are tied for top spot with 2-3 records. Hamilton and Winnipeg are tied for third at 1-4.

Calvillo's back in top form to take on the Lions

VANCOUVER — On the field tonight, Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo and B.C. Lions safety Barron Miles will be opponents as their 2-2 CFL teams clash at B.C. Place Stadium. Off the field, Calvillo and Miles, a former Alouette, remain close friends, spending time together in the off-season with their families and staging football camps around Montreal.

Smith goes own way while on sidelines

SURREY, B.C. — The B.C. Lions specifically scheduled a ceremony celebrating the life of their late president and chief executive, Bob Ackles, last week so that coaches and players could participate, yet star back Joe Smith opted to stay home. Injured Smith spent last Friday's 27-18 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers shopping with his wife and reading a book, not at the B.C. Place Stadium, where the game and ceremony were taking place.

Joseph returns to Regina on a roll

Kerry Joseph is returning to Regina on a roll. Joseph leads the Toronto Argonauts into Saskatchewan to face the undefeated Roughriders, the same team Joseph guided to a Grey Cup title last year after being named the CFL's outstanding player. The Roughriders traded Joseph to Toronto in the off-season after being unable to agree to a contract extension with the veteran quarterback.

Lions roar for Ackles

VANCOUVER — As spectacles go, Bob Ackles would have loved every drop of it. As games go, he would have sweated it out like the rest of the B.C. Lions. The Lions were not at their best during a Canadian Football League game to commemorate their late club president and chief executive, who passed suddenly on July 6 at 69, but B.C.

Lions to honour Ackles with orange

VANCOUVER — Bob Ackles always loved orange. When the B.C. Lions' late president and chief executive officer returned to the organization in 2002, he wanted to see a return of the orange jerseys and the original lion's paw logo that he knew from his days as the team's original water boy in the 1950s. He shared that sentiment with new general manager and head coach Wally Buono, but left the final decision to his football chief.

CFL now offensive in the right way

In the CFL, the best defence has always been a good offence. So far, so good, in what feels like a watershed season for the three-down game. Scoring is up, excitement is up, and even the negative storylines, like the Toronto Argonauts' quarterbacking mess, at least spur good, healthy, football conversations. All of the preseason hand-wringing over the NFL's arrival in Canada is, for the moment, a bit beside the point.

Playing season for Ackles

SURREY, B.C. — B.C. Lions general manager and head coach Wally Buono has been turned into a statesman this week, after the death of the CFL club's president and chief executive officer, Bob Ackles. Buono has spent as much time grieving and answering questions about his friend — a CFL legend who died of a heart attack last Sunday — as he has preparing his team for tonight's game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Lions to honour Ackles

SURREY, B.C. — Bob Ackles, the fallen leader of the B.C. Lions, will be memorialized after the CFL club's next home game. Yesterday, the team announced plans for a series of tributes to Ackles, who died suddenly Sunday of a heart attack on Bowen Island. Most of the tributes will revolve around a July 18 game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C.
