Bombers turn back the clock

WINNIPEG — For the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers, everything old is new again. At 1-6, the Bombers hope reinstating starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and veteran receiver Milt Stegall, who was out with a sore knee, will be the necessary spark to snag a win Thursday when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5). "There's still opportunity for us, and there's still time to wake up," said Bombers head coach Doug Berry.

Dawson watch goes on for Argos

The Toronto Argonauts drafted Canadian running back Clifton Dawson in 2006 knowing they'd have to be patient to get him into their uniform. They're going to have to wait a little longer now. Two CFL sources requesting anonymity said Tuesday the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed the former Harvard star after releasing him prior to their 23-20 overtime exhibition loss to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night.

Calvillo passes 300 in win

MONTREAL — Pleased as he was to achieve his latest milestone accomplishment, Anthony Calvillo has bigger goals in sight for the Montreal Alouettes. Calvillo became the fourth quarterback in CFL history to reach 300 career touchdown passes as Montreal ended a three-game losing streak with a 40-33 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday night.

Eskimos may get visit from Tucker

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos could get an inspirational lift Thursday when they host the B.C. Lions at Commonwealth Stadium as receiver Jason Tucker, who cracked his spine in a helmet-to-helmet hit in Hamilton, is coming home. "It would be tremendous just to see him walk through the locker-room," Eskimos head coach Danny Maciocia said Wednesday.

The West's winning ways

Take a look at the CFL standings and it's clear to see where the league's power base is. All four West Division teams have winning records led by the Saskatchewan Roughriders' perfect 5-0 mark. But Edmonton, Calgary and B.C. are all tied for second at 3-2. Compare that to the East Division, where both Montreal and Toronto are tied for top spot with 2-3 records. Hamilton and Winnipeg are tied for third at 1-4.

Calvillo's back in top form to take on the Lions

VANCOUVER — On the field tonight, Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo and B.C. Lions safety Barron Miles will be opponents as their 2-2 CFL teams clash at B.C. Place Stadium. Off the field, Calvillo and Miles, a former Alouette, remain close friends, spending time together in the off-season with their families and staging football camps around Montreal.

Smith goes own way while on sidelines

SURREY, B.C. — The B.C. Lions specifically scheduled a ceremony celebrating the life of their late president and chief executive, Bob Ackles, last week so that coaches and players could participate, yet star back Joe Smith opted to stay home. Injured Smith spent last Friday's 27-18 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers shopping with his wife and reading a book, not at the B.C. Place Stadium, where the game and ceremony were taking place.

Joseph returns to Regina on a roll

Kerry Joseph is returning to Regina on a roll. Joseph leads the Toronto Argonauts into Saskatchewan to face the undefeated Roughriders, the same team Joseph guided to a Grey Cup title last year after being named the CFL's outstanding player. The Roughriders traded Joseph to Toronto in the off-season after being unable to agree to a contract extension with the veteran quarterback.

Eiben expected to miss two weeks

TORONTO — Toronto Argonauts linebacker Kevin Eiben is expected to be out for at least two weeks due to a sprained medial collateral ligament. The 28-year-old native of Delta, B.C., suffered the right knee injury in Toronto's 35-31 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday. A team spokesperson confirmed the news Monday. Eiben, a CFL all-star last season, has 19 tackles and one sack this season.

Als release Armstead, Kizer

MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes signed former Toronto cornerback Khalil Carter on Monday and released two of the goats from a loss in Saskatchewan on the weekend — kick returner Jason Armstead and defensive back Rayshaun Kizer. Carter was released late in training camp by the Argonauts a day after an on-field argument with coach Rich Stubler.

Roughriders remain perfect

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 4-0 for the first time since 1970 — 11 years before defensive back Lance Frazier was born.

Dozen on the dial

All times Eastern 1 BRITISH OPEN Without Tiger Woods in the field, the story so far at this year's British Open has been the weather: rain, cold and wicked winds. Black rain suits and tuques have been the standard uniform at Royal Birkdale. Open organizers really ought to hold the tournament in the summer. It would make golf's best event that much better. Stamps hand Trestman first loss

MONTREAL — In a battle of the CFL's top two offensive clubs, it was the Calgary Stampeders defence that came out on top. Joffrey Reynolds and Ken-Yon Rambo scored touchdowns and Sandro DeAngelis went 3-for-4 on field goals as the Stampeders held Montreal to only two points in the second half of a 23-19 victory over the Alouettes on Thursday night.

Reaping the rewards

The simplest explanation for Marc Trestman's immediate success as a CFL head coach might be his respect for the differences between three-down football and the four-down variety. In leading the Montreal Alouettes to two impressive wins to begin his first CFL campaign, Trestman has his doubters second-guessing themselves. There were plenty of them when the Alouettes made the unusual step last winter of hiring a coach without any CFL experience.

CFL Week 3

THURSDAY Calgary Stampeders (1-1) at Montreal Alouettes (2-0) The matchup: One week after surrendering 448 passing yards to the Edmonton Eskimos, the Calgary defence will try to stop the league's top attack. Montreal has looked like a well-oiled machine under new head coach Marc Trestman, scoring 71 points and jumping out to big leads in successive wins over Hamilton and Winnipeg.
